It’s Copenhagen Fashion Week, right at the end of the silly season, since the school holidays will be over very soon, and everybody will slide back into their places, albeit a bit reluctant after the customary three weeks summer holidays.

News are very hard to come by in Denmark at the moment - therefore: Copenhagen Fashion Week it is.

With Crown Princess Mary on her way to China, where she’ll join her husband to watch some sports, Denmark’s fashion celebrity no. one has let avid gossip journalists on a budget down.

And they were not disappointed.

Ever since a certain Ms Hilton arrived in Copenhagen the day before yesterday - nay, many days before that actually - papers were buzzing with the news that she would grace the fashion week and probably do some sightseeing.

Some crowds seem to have gone wild. As they always do, when a real American celebrity comes to visit Copenhagen.

And because the journalists have nothing better to do at the moment (not even those who work for media that do not just consider themselves tabloids) we can watch the young lady’s progress through Denmark’s capital hour for hour.

When Ms Hilton visited Tivoli there were thousands of people who wanted to catch a glimpse of her - it’s the attraction of glamour I am told. It is simply captivating.

But it means as well that a lot of attention is drawn away from what ought to have been the main event: the Fashion Week.

The Danish fashion industry has been doing well for quite some time yet, and some of its representatives dream of Copenhagen as a fourth big international fashion centre besides Paris, Milan, and New York.

However this means that it should be the event itself that spreads the glamour and the mystery, not the people who may or may not have shown up to watch it.

But Danes are uncomfortable with glamour. So the designers who have their base here aren’t really keen on exhibiting themselves. Therefore we may very well see more celebrity hunts in Copenhagen in about a year’s time.
